Who We Are

A Question of Eagles is Melissa and Jonathan!

We’re a husband and wife team committed to making heirloom quality pottery for your home and table since 2012. We both grew up in the Midwest, but have lived all across the states from Oregon to New York to California. In 2020, we returned to our Midwestern roots and are headquartered in the SoBro neighborhood of Indianapolis. In 2022 we opened our first retail showroom & general store called Prairie General.

We are inspired by nature, our travels, the landscape and culture of the West, and studio pottery of the 60's and 70's. We believe in the transformative power that using hand made goods can have on our everyday life. We describe ourselves as Rustic Modernists, which for us means an interest in clean modern shapes with an earthy handmade bent. With backgrounds in fine art, we’re drawn to the sculptural qualities of ceramics, and through our functional designs see our work as an extension of our art practices.

All of our work is made with food safe and lead-free materials.

If interested in wholesale, hospitality or a commissioned project, please contact us, we would love to work with you!

Our Materials & Processes

Plastic-Free Shipping Materials

Since 2019, we have strived to make all of our shipping materials plastic-free, and we are proud of it! We use paper tape, kraft paper fill, cardboard boxes and laser cut paper ‘bubble wrap’ to wrap all our pieces for shipping.

Food Safe and Lead-free

We use only clay and glaze that is food safe & lead-free, and we source our materials from local, reputable ceramic suppliers. There is nothing toxic about our pottery.

Rustic Modern Aesthetic

Our level of quality is high, but we do not aim for a machined look. We find that slight variations in shape, size, glaze application are welcomed and add to our pottery’s artisan beauty.

Handmade

All our pieces are hand made in our Indianapolis studio by us! Jonathan works on the potter’s wheel and Melissa is a hand builder. Together we make and design all of the AQOE pieces you see in our shop.
